21 Apr 08 17:08 | ChapmanSledge said regarding ScreeningAndBriefIntervention: Without question, screening for potential Alcohol Withdrawal has reduced morbitity and mortality in our hospital. Previously, unanticipated severe alcohol withdrawal, especially in trauma patients, adversely affected outcomes and increased costs. Currently, all hospital admits are screened for potential alcohol withdrawal, an alert signals the attending to institute a DT Prophylaxis protocol which includes a consult with the Addiction Medicine Service. Now that we are asking the questions, Substance Use Disorders other than alcohol are more frequently coming to light. Patient care has improved, but we are still in the process of determining outcomes and financial impact. I would strongly favor a JCAHO standard for SBIRT.
