I support the proposed initiative to have screening and brief intervention for alcohol and drugs perrformed by hospitals routinely as a standard of care. Research has demonstrated over and over again that a fair percentage of patients in the hospital at a given time are there for medical consequeneces of their substance abuse. To treat what is a result of a disease without addresing the underlying cause is not to provide good medical care.
