Overview

Students at high risk for alcohol and other drug problems are identified through screening at the health service clinic or through violations of housing or student conduct policies. BASICS intervention is provided.

Implementation

The project was implemented by the Health Promotion Program of University Health Service, U. of Hawaii at Manoa, during the 2005-06 school year. BASICS (Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students) was modified to include online eCHUG. A data gathering session and a feedback session usually take about 1 hour each.

Evaluation

Qualitative and quantitative data are being gathered to evaluate program process and outcome.

Results

The project is accomplishing its numerical goals for screening and intervention. Six-week follow-up data indicate increase of abstinence in students; other data will be analyzed following the completion of the project.

Benefit

Cost per client is within SAMHSA guidelines for the original grant. Cost-benefit analysis will be conducted at project completion.
