Description of Research

Booklet was designed and written by Patricia Mannix, RN, Director, Progressive Cardiac Care Unit, Hahnemann University Hospital, Philadelphia, PA. Feel free to use or adapt this booklet for your organization's purposes, but please provide proper attribution to Hahnemann University Hospital and the author. Patricia was originally our Education Specialist for the CCU/Heart Failure Telemetry Unit. This booklet was designed by her at this time in response to smoking cessation for the Heart Failure Patient. Other unit directors were very much intersted in bringing the books onto their units, soon this was put on all desk tops and the entire house began using for patients requiring smoking information and an incentive to quit. The patient contract in the book helps encourage patients to be more pro-active in their attempt to quit smoking. Our core measure results for smoking cessation reflect the attentiveness of the staff and the content of the book. In January 2004 our smoking scores hovered around the 20% mark, since 2005 we have consistantly scored 100% in smoking cessation monitoring for CHF, AMI, Pneumonia and CABG.

Nice booklet. Who is responsible for giving this booklet to the patients? The nurse who admits the patient? How do you follow up with the information in the booklet? Do you have RN's with tobacco cessation counseling experience/training on staff?

This is a great tool and concept! It acknowledges the fact that the addiction is hard to break and helps build the reasons that the smoker needs to support his Contract to Quit. Nicely done!
