An important consideration is what may not even have been measured yet, i.e., the prevention of trauma, abuse, violence and progression of substance abuse and dependence that SBIRT provides. A brief intervention when a patient is recognized as misusing prescription medications or alcohol can slow the path to dependence, solicit early access to help and identify a family member in need of support. A short intervention about misuse also has the potential to spot patients attempting to self-medicate Axis I and II psychiatric disorders.
