A brief intervention when a patient is recognized as misusing prescription medications or alcohol can slow the path to dependence, solicit early access to help and identify a family member in need of support. A short intervention about misuse also has the potential to spot patients attempting to self-medicate Axis I and II psychiatric disorders.
